We’ve eaten at Crop in the old W 6th Street location for dinner and also enjoyed immensely their Sunday “leftover” dinner. For our anniversary, we decided to again visit Crop, this time in their new location for lunch. As expected, the results were perfect.
First, the new location. It would not be out of place to call the corner of Lorain Road and W 25th breathtaking. Constructed in the 1920’s as a bank building and used for an assortment of banking and governmental functions, it is amazing how effortlessly the space transforms into a dining room. The high ceiling is segmented into plastered squares with molding and floral accents. The high arched windows allow for a birds-eye view of the stately West Side Market building. Massive columns provide for an implied stability. We’ve always admired Chef Steven Schimoler’s skill in crafting solid, balanced foods. He is at home in this new building.
Michele started with the Mahi-Mahi based soup special and it was gone in a flash. Jeff, who loves a late-night bowl of popcorn, never had their iconic Balsamic Popcorn, so decide it was time and not a moment too soon! The corn was tossed with the balsamic vinegar, but also some nicely grilled red onions, peppers, arugula and sun-dried tomatoes before being topped with assiago cheese and basil. It was a real treat that even Michele, not a big fan of popcorn, could not resist.
Michele elected to have the salmon sandwich grilled and served on a Chibatta bread roll with bacon and a cold barley side salad. Jeff ordered the Chicken Saltimbocca with gnocchi and brown butter sauce. We finished with Holy Mole, a flourless chocolate cake with mole ganache and mole ice cream. Great food combined with a waiter that carefully advised and answered all of our questions made this a wonderful anniversary lunch.
Crop has been extremely busy since moving to the HOT West 25th Street food scene. We tried a few times to get reservations, but failed. It is getting a bit easier now, but with food this good and a room this elegant, it is advisable to make your plans early. Once you dine here, you’ll want to come back often!
